Shot a Man in Reno?

Next on the Love & Radio schedule: anger. We know you've felt it. There was that time you slammed down the phone, slammed the door, slammed your friend against the wall. (Anger is conducive to slamming.) That time you broke a pencil . . . with your bare hands. Or that time you did and said nothing at all. You're the dangerous type. We know you.

Anyway, we want to hear about it (from a safe distance) - submit your stories to contact[at]loveandradio[dot]org.

They can be personal experiences, reflections, or just some anecdote you think will really piss us off. Get drunk, get on your hotmail soapbox, and start typing, people.

Thanksgiving F-Bombs

The FCC defines indecency as "language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community broadcast standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory organs or activities."

In the unregulated world of podcasting, we want to make sure our listeners are protected from language they find "patently offensive." So, in keeping with the FCC's guidelines, I drew up a list of each utterance of sexual or excretory organs or activities in the last episode. Using this list, you can tell when someone's about to drop a curse word or two, and you can protect yourself by covering your ears and humming really loudly for a few seconds.

Offensive Content in Love in Bits
1:53 - shit
4:01 - shit
4:33 - dick
4:35 - fuck
11:07 - asshole
11:18 - assholes

Episode 003: Love in Bits

58:19 | Download | Subscribe

One of listener Jenny A.'s suitors during her brief foray into the world of online dating.

When we asked Christian Rudder--co-founder of the online personals site OKCupid.com--to be on the show, we pitched it as a way for his company to get some good publicity. Unfortunately, as the picture Jenny sent us illustrates, most stories worth telling don't give much of an endorsement to online dating. The thing is, the horror stories are usually way more interesting than the success stories. So, our apologies to Mr. Rudder for not having more balance.

On this week's show:
  • Christian describes how he knows everything about what kind of lover you are. Uncanny.

  • Aaron Henkin of WYPR's The Signal reads a sample of the OKCupid Love Personality Types.

  • Eric Herot flies down to Missouri to meet a Bajoran he met on a Star Trek simming board.

  • Christina Heller (who is not desperate at all) meets up with some dude from craigslist.

  • I discover the dangers of asking someone out on a date before you know who they are.

  • Bitch PHD (the eponymous author of the wonderful blog Bitch PHD) describes the gender dynamics of an Adult Friend Finder chatroom.

  • Christian explains how to tell if a boy likes you.

  • Adam Conover of sketch comedy group Olde English discovers that girls really like to be told they're secret agents.

  • And finally, Christina's friend cock-teases a businessman from Israel.

  • Playlist (in order of appearance)
    Title - Artist - Album
Glue of the World - Four Tet - Pause
Feeling Fine - Sharpshooters - Choked Up
Folium - John Zorn - Film Works V (Tears of Ecstasy)

    After These Messages

    We'll be . . . riiiight back.

Nick and I had some pretty high ambitions with this latest show: we dug for material, then we dug some more, then we wound up in China, then we realized we had a shitload to edit, then we crawled back through our hole to the states and realized we had full time jobs. So point being, this one is going to be a bit late - check back on Wednesday night for our third episode of Love & Radio, Computer Love. It should be, you know, half decent.

But if you're hungry for some online lovin' content, it seems apropos to mention that Nick and I made a guest appearance on Anatomy of a Love Story, Benjamen Walker's latest episode of Theory of Everything, and had a hilarious time doing it.

No, we didn't actually meet on a dating site for people with STDs. But for a few minutes, go with it, and tell all your friends.

    Computer Love, Computer Love

Just to prove to you we pull this crap out at the last minute, our next episode is about online dating, and we need your stories.

If you've been on a date with someone from the internet, or even if you couldn't get past the IMing phase because they were just too weird, we want to hear about it. Got some quirky/funny/sad IM transcripts? Send us a copy and we'll have someone read it on the air (with the names changed of course). Or just email us a very brief synopsis of the shenanigans that occurred and how we can best get in touch with you. It just might be your ticket to fame and fortune.
